Clinical Study of Buerger's Disease, Based on Angiogram

Abstract
In Buerger's disease, angiographic findings are not pathognomonic, but in most cases they are diagnostic, So, we studied a total of-47 patients of Buerger's disease, based on angiogram, who were treated at the Department of Surgery, Han Gang
Sacred
Heart Hospital and Kang Dong Sacred Heart Hospital during the past 10 years from January, 1981 to December, 1990 and obtained the following results.
1) Out of 47 patients, 43 patients(91.5%) were male and only 4 patients were female.
2) The majority of patients were under 50 years of age(66%).
3) The most common occupation was labor(34%), followed by unemployed, business, commerce, etc..
4) 40 cases were smokers and 7 cases were non-smokers. The majority of these smokers smoked more than 11 years and daily a half pack of cigarettes.
5) In Fontaine's classification, Grade 4(ulcer, gangrene) was the most common subjective symptom(43%).
6) The duration of symptom was below 6 months in 19 cases(40%), between 6 months and 1 year in 10 cases(21%), between 1 year and 2 years in 7 cases(15%), between 2 years and 4 years in 5 cases(11%) and over 4 years in 6 cases(13%).
7) Among the past medical history, previous operations for Buerger's disease were predominent and the majority of these operations were amputation.
8) Diagnoses were made by angiogram with or without pathology. The most common site of obstruction were posterior tibial artery(33%), popliteal artery(26%), anterior tibial artery(21%), femoral artery(12%), peroneal artery(8%) in femoral
angiogram, and
radial artery(60%), ulnar artery(20%), and brachial artery(20%) in brachial angiogram in that order of frequency.
9) In methods of treatment, lumber sympathectomy or lumbar sympathectomy followed by various level of amputation was the majority of treatment(45%).
